Who is the school counselor?

Hello, My name is Betty Ross and I am the school counselor at Glenwood Elementary. I graduated from Clemson University with a BA degree in Early Childhood Education and a masters in Personnel Services - School Counseling. To be a school counselor, one must have a masters degree and pass a comprehensive exam.

My goal as the counselor at Glenwood is to provide a comprehensive counseling program that meets the developmental needs of all children. My program is organized around three areas essential for student growth and development: Cognitive Development, Career Development, and Socio/Emotional Development. A comprehensive school counseling program serves ALL students. It includes large and small group counseling, incorporates short-term individual counseling and works with all stakeholders: parents, teachers and community.

School Counseling Program

School-Wide Programs:  Character Day to Day messages over WGLN News.  Special Emphasis Weeks: Great Kindness Challenge, Anti-Bullying Week, Red Ribbon Week, National School Counseling Week  and  special weeks sponsored by our special area team.  We will also participate in school-wide service learning projects such as collecting can food, pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House,Vicki Frank Memory Garden etc...

Classroom Guidance:  I will work with all K - 6 classes once a month. Lessons will focus on NC Guidance Essential Standards and Mindset Standards.  I work with special area team to coordinate lesson time.

Small Groups: Topics will include social thinking, mindset, friendship issues.  Students, parents and teachers may refer for groups.  I see all K-1 students during a special class and grades 2-5 during their lunch.  Groups run 6-8 weeks.  We meet once a week.

Individual: Students are welcomed to speak to me about concerns.  Teachers and parents may refer students as well. I work with individuals on a short term basis.  I'll be glad to help you get set up with one of the community agencies if additional help is needed.

During the year I will conduct mini meetings with all students.  This is a quick way for me to check in with all students.

I look forward to working with each of you this year.  We are going to have a great year!

Our students recite the School Dragon Pledge every morning.  It reminds us all that our character counts.

Mentors needed!

Mentors Needed!!

If you have 30 minutes - to an hour a week you can give, we need you! Please think about investing in the life of a child. We need mentors to spend time with our kids helping them read, do math or just talk. Please contact me if you are interested in being a part of our mentoring program.
